ON BIPOC MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH: As a Black ON BIPOC MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH: As a Black girl growing up, I was never explicitly told to smile and bear it. But the behaviour of adults around me seemed to say "don't make a fuss" as I observed them navigating their challenges: prolonged stress, grief, etc., triggering depression.

My novel is set in 1980s South Africa, during the apartheid era, a time in history when people who look like me didn't talk about mental health, didn't seek help and even if they did, they wouldn't get medical support.

The irony is that even today, in the real world and in progressive countries, it is still difficult to access mental health care for people who look like me due to a host of reasons.
