Love Happens Everyday

Cynics are in disagreement
What is a box of chocolate
But life to give a toothache!

I don’t mean to offend as I
Gather a tercet to sing a song
But there’s a wonderful joy

Blushing face of February
Charms the naked branch
But love happens everyday

On Writing and Living…

It’s February; the month of love. I know it’s easy to get cynical about the whole Valentine’s Day commercial part. As I point out in the poem above, love happens everyday and can be expressed in most simplest of ways. So, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to set aside a day to celebrate love for and with your spouse or significant other in a way that feels natural to you both.

“Is there something you learned more about or some skill you picked up because of a significant other?” asks Rommy.

My list is endless, and includes an array of seasonal outdoor activities, among other things. But what stands out most is the introduction, by my husband, to works of J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin and Neil Gaiman to name a few. Mind you, I am the writer in our family, he is a gamer!

So, I feel truly blessed to have my husband’s support to pursue my passion. This is what I mean by love happens everyday.

  1. ‘But love happens everyday’…So very true. I love that ‘But’ too. Love defies and deifies everything. Beautifully put Khaya.

  2. Haha! Gulp. Indeed, like many days of celebration, like many months of special history and like holy days for Quakers– the day draws attention to what could be and is present each day.
This understated poem is a BEAUTY, but that too, in your words may be a constant. Thank you.

  3. You know the toothache bit made me roar, right? Mostly because it’s true.

I love celebrating holidays. If there is a reason to party, I party. But for some reason, Valentine’s Day has never done it for me. Perhaps, it’s the fact that I’ve seen so many people stressed over the thing to the point that the holiday turns nightmarish. Who knows. Like the poem suggests, everyday loving is best.

Oh, and I’m all grins about the fact that your husband introduced you to Neil Gaiman. In the case of my Piano Man and I, we both loved Gaiman’s works for a long time. Before we met, he focused on the comics and I focused on the prose. Now we have a complete collection of both. 😀

  4. Love not only happens in February but happens everyday I love charms the naked branch
    The picture is intriguing

  5. I don’t go for the commercial clap-trap either, but Valentine’s Day as an excuse for yet another love poem is just fine – albeit needing no excuses on other days. Your poem is wise and delectable. I’m glad you have such a happy love, and congratulations on the chapbook.

  6. i do agree with your thesis ‘Love happens everyday’ but i know the joy special days can bring, yes, i enjoyed your powerful poem and process notes as well.
Happy you dropped by my blog today Khaya

    much ✿ܓlove

  7. Your husband is a gamer too??? Mine was one of my first GMs. 😀 LOL, he’s diabetic so we don’t do the chocolate thing around here either. I’m going with Star Wars minatures for him and he told me he’s getting me raw sea urchin (yum!).

Yeah, I think some of the most romantic things happened on ordinary days. Love doesn’t need Hallmark’s permission to happen.

Also… Stacey’s art and your poems??? To quote geek icon Fry from Futurerama, “Shut up and take my money!”

  8. And that everyday love is the glue that keeps it all together!

  9. I love this take on love, Khaya. As I’m not a Valentine’s day kind of girl, I especially love:
    ‘Blushing face of February
    Charms the naked branch
    But love happens everyday’.

  10. Curiously I have long felt the same way for once in relationship what need is there to celebrate it only on one day a year for you probably do this almost very day in any case!

  11. I know right about the toothache, and the whole fuss over the thing. 😀

Gaiman is the real deal. What a pleasure to hear that you and your Piano Man are huge fans, too! *grinning widely*

  12. I’m always looking forward to special days or holidays to celebrate. These events are a joy, when they don’t involve stressful shopping of things we don’t need, anyway.

  13. Yep, he is! 😀 I remember you once mentioned you and your hubby’s D&D playing days. Star Wars miniatures sound like a perfect gift. I also hear stories about sea urchin aphrodisiac qualities…
    Oh yum, such nice treats!

And yes please, I’ll take your money anytime. Thanks, Rommy!

  14. Beautiful poem, Khaya, and congrats on the up and coming book. And some happy reading happening too, I see, with a bit of fantasy! I hope the rest of your month is…love-ly. <3

  15. Thank you so much for popping by, Diana. Gosh! There’s so much going on right now with writing and reading…yeah, fantasy too. When I finally have a breather, I’ll catch up with happenings on your side. <3
