A Letter to Autumn

Trees are poised and calm against the wind that ruffles. With your arrival, squirrels scurry around, claim space and store nuts; a preservation of basic necessities. Mallards rest, while counterparts with no loyalty scan the landscape looking for an escape to greener pastures. Maples like ballerina girls in tutus, line up and shine under the spotlight. But they are not fooled, for sooner than later you will steal the joy paraded in colourful costumes and disappear into the wild, leaving them bare to face winter alone. Yet right now, we delight and feast from goodness of nature. With our hands we eat mindfulness, for October is a month of dancing with things we cannot control, a month of celebrating the gift of being alive.

  8. October is natural magic, indeed. I love the imagery of dancing (with Nature) without control. Dancing is a wild thing, a thing of instinct–lack of control fits right in, adds to the musical fun. I love your October, Khaya!

  9. That is a beautiful letter to Autumn, Khaya. It is my favorite time of year. The intense heat of summer has passed, but it is not yet chillingly cold as the kaleidoscope of weather blows through. The sky seems so different, multi-leveled, fractured and textured. All kinds of good things have been coming in from garden and orchard. It is a golden time, the transition into winter’s dark when I will rest and reflect.

  10. Such a beautiful post! You described Autumn perfectly!!
I hope you are doing well Khaya! Thank you for coming by my blog! Big Hugs!

  11. “a golden time, and transition…when will rest and reflect.” So poetic, Lavinia! I love how you describe autumn. Also nothing gives more meaning to enjoying fruits of one’s labour as your garden and orchard do with all good things, you’re harvesting. Enjoy the season, and thank you so much for reading my unfinished letter to Autumn 🙂
